Fighting is Okay

Itagaki   Um... I guess I have a confession to make, but I can never turn down a fight when it comes from within the industry.
Matsumoto   Fighting is okay. Yep.
Itagaki   If I get slandered, I give it right back.
Matsumoto   Yes.
Itagaki   I never start it, but when it gets done on me, ... I feel like I'll do it if I am dared to ...
Matsumoto   At that point there's no need to hold back.
Itagaki   At that point.
Matsumoto   You should go all out. I never pull punches in those cases. I say everything I want to say. I've gotten in fist fights too.
Itagaki   Yes.
Matsumoto   There's no need to pull away.
Itagaki   Yes. I understand. Thank you.
Matsumoto   Those guys that like to talk behind people's backs that are the problem.
Itagaki   Yes. The people I hate the most are people who like to throw stones from behind the crowd.
Matsumoto   Yes yes yes.
Itagaki   I never want to be that kind of a person.
Matsumoto   Facing down someone upfront is fine.
Itagaki   I see.
Matsumoto   You can get into a huge fight, in that case. Those don't count as fighting. It's more like competing. It's not related. The guys who talk behind peoples' backs, the ones that throw stones from behind, they take the whole world down with them.
Itagaki   Yes.
Matsumoto   It brings themselves down in the long run.
Itagaki   Yes, I see.
Matsumoto   I don't want to be like that.
Itagaki   Yes, indeed.
Matsumoto   So if someone else's things do well, I pay my respect. I say "Ah, he must be working real hard." Which leads to "Well, then I have to work hard too".
Itagaki   Yes, indeed.
Matsumoto   So my principle is "Everyone work hard".
Itagaki   Yes, thank you.
Matsumoto   That's all. I still have much to do before I die.
Itagaki   We are all waiting for more great things to come from you.
Matsumoto   Right now, it's a turning point for equipment. I really want to make a piece that uses a system that supports the new equipment. I'm doing a lot of iterating and testing now.
Itagaki   Wow.

Dream Collaboration

Itagaki-san would like to present something to you the next time he meets you, sensei. To think about something with you...
Matsumoto   If we can make something. I can give you ideas.
Itagaki   I would be honored. It would be wonderful.
Matsumoto   Artistic ideas, I mean. I saw your footage earlier, and I thought "This is almost like real footage." That was my impression. It's hard to tell now which parts are real footage and which parts are not.
Itagaki   Yes.
Matsumoto   So then you can make period pieces, prehistoric or futuristic, anything freely. If you can use all of those techniques. Then it becomes how you design the material. I can give you all the help you need, for facial and materials design.
Itagaki   It would be a great honor. Thank you very much.
Matsumoto   And if it moves, that's good. I can make the most beautiful woman in the world.
All   (Laughs)
Itagaki   I'm already excited.
Matsumoto   Drawing the woman of your dreams, the one you always looked for, and then getting someone to move her around - Nothing would be better.
All    (Laughs)
Itagaki   Sensei, could you spare some time and take a look at another thing of ours?
Matsumoto   Yes please, let me see.
Itagaki   This is sort of a digest, and has no story, but I think you can see the quality.
-- (Watching Footage) --
Matsumoto   Yes, if you can get this far. Really. You can't tell the real image apart from the computer graphics.
Itagaki   That's what we aimed for. This part is real footage.
Matsumoto   Yes.
Itagaki    Over here is all computer graphics. The backdrop over here is all real.
Matsumoto   Ah.
Itagaki   Yes. This is all computer graphics.
Matsumoto   Hmm. You really can' t tell.
Itagaki   Yes.
Matsumoto   The cuts are all mixed.
Itagaki   Oh, this is an homage to Claire.*1
*1   A character that appears in "Galaxy Express 999". She has a transparent mechanized body.
Matsumoto   Yes.
Itagaki   This is a bridge in Aomori.
Matsumoto   Yes.
Itagaki   The ocean behind this is real. It's from the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand.
Matsumoto    I see.
-- (End Film) --
Itagaki   Now everything is composite like this.
Matsumoto   Yes, with this you can make a 100 person parade into a 1000 person one.
Itagaki   Exactly. That bridge, the cherry blossom and the five-story tower, we wanted to use the real thing, not a computer image, so we rented out a certain section in Kyoto. However, it rained on that day. Of course, we had a few other spots, just in case the Kyoto spot was unavailable.
Matsumoto   Yes, yes.
Itagaki   So as it turned out, the filming squad ended up travelling north with the cherry blossoms (laughs)
Matsumoto   Ah, I see. So you would go.
Itagaki   So actually, the cherry blossoms and the bridge is Hirosaki castle. The five-story tower is the one from Kyoto, and the footages are synthesized.
          That's impressive.
Matsumoto   Makes it hard to trust the news. You never know how much is true.
Itagaki   Yes.
Matsumoto   But this is exciting.
Itagaki   I'm honored. Um... and since I'm a great fan of you, I actually am quoting from one of your words.
Matsumoto   Yes.
Itagaki   As my favorite phrase, I included this in our company homepage.
Matsumoto   Now carrying with a tough thousand thoughts, the whistle blows once more. Now carrying a thousand thoughts, the train departs once more. As one journey ends, another is about to begin. Farewell, Maetel. Farewell, Galaxy Express 999. Farewell, Days of Youth.
Itagaki   I apologize that I didn't ask you beforehand.
Matsumoto   Yes. It's alright.
Itagaki   Thank you very much.
Matsumoto   Good bye, days of youth... Well, Valhalla, good luck.
Itagaki   Thank you.
Matsumoto   Please make exciting games. Fun games, ones that fascinate you.
Itagaki   Yes. We will make precisely that.
Matsumoto   Well, everyone, good luck, and work hard at getting it right.
Itagaki   Thank you very much.
All   Thank you very much.
