For the first installment of the new year, I want to start off with an album bright and sunny, just like the group's name itself - "It's A Beautiful Day."

"It's A Beautiful Day" is the self-titled first album by the San Francisco psychedelic group, and while the name itself is wonderful, the cover art is also really beautiful. I remember when I was still in middle school buying this album on impulse after seeing how great the art was.

And when the needle dropped... oh man, it was like a huge shock to my senses.

With the amazing combination of such pure, delicate male and strong female vocals by contraries, accompanied by the perfect blend of gypsy violin and blues harp, it created a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere that is hard to describe.

The flow between the first and second tracks, "White Bird" and "Hot Summer Day," is absolutely amazing. When you listen to this sequence in the middle of summer under the burning hot sun, you can feel the melody sink all the way into the deepest parts of your heart.

And so we start 2012 with an important but not very well known album from the golden age of psychedelic rock, "It's A Beautiful Day."

It's A Beautiful Day

It's A Beautiful Day
San Francisco Sound (November 13, 2001)

The first thing I want you to notice is the cover art. The jacket features a beautiful woman staring up at a clean, fresh summer sky. Like one of the "Woman with Umbrella" paintings by Claude Monet, the woman looks as pure as an angel, radiating kindness and beauty. To relate it to another jacket ... actually, I can't even think of anything that is as refreshing as this piece. Interestingly enough, this is the same woman from Quicksilver Messenger Service's "Happy Trails" album that I introduced in back in the fourth installment of this series.

And then there's the music. We touched on the softness and sweetness of the first two tracks earlier, but from the third track on, the music goes in a much different direction with the addition of fuzz guitars and shouting vocals, and then a rocking groove that sounds like it's being tossed around in the middle of a storm in "Wasted Union Blues." There's still a video around of this song performed live that I really want to recommend. The performance took place at Kralingen (in the Netherlands), coincidentally, in the middle of a storm. The fervor of the vocals and violin gets absolutely insane, like they are combining with the ferocity of the storm, and you can really feel the intensity. You definitely need to look this up on YouTube right now.

(By the way, the British group Family also had an amazing performance at this festival.)

They did a great job packing the feelings of both calm and energy into the first half of this album.

Unfortunately, the second half of the album doesn't have quite the impact as the first. With that said though, you can definitely still enjoy listening to it leisurely, and it's easy to tell just how skilled they are as a band. In particular, anyone who listens to the song "Bombay Calling" will notice that it's extremely similar to Deep Purple's famous "Child In Time." "Bombay Calling" was released first, and it is said that John Lord, a fan of "It's A Beautiful Day" at the time, wrote his song in homage of the group. Go ahead and listen to both and compare for yourself.

The group's first album definitely ranks in historically as one of the best albums of its time. The following albums, however... don't have quite the same impact. Actually, the first track on the second album, "Don & Dewey," is pretty good and worth a listen. When I was in elementary school, it was used as the opening to a FM radio rock show I used to listen to so I have a lot of memories with it. It's got a good rhythm and unambiguity.

To those of you who listened to this album and liked it, go check out Affinity, Flock, Curved Air, or any artist on the Neon label too. I'm sure you'll like it.

"It's A Beautiful Day" - buried and forgotten by history. You gotta hear this!

At long last, we have the band I love to death, The Who.
Our band plays tons of The Who covers, and I even have their sticker on my favorite Gibson SG. Their work has had a huge influence on me.
While their popularity in Japan is laughably low, for the rest of the world they make up one of the three top rock bands of all time, along with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones (though some in America might put the Beach Boys in there as well). Undoubtedly a divine band.

The group debuted in 1964 under the name "High Numbers," but immediately went back to their original name "The Who" and started over with the song "I Can't Explain." Their third single, "My Generation," became a huge hit, with the lyrics "I hope I die before I get old" and a hard hitting beat stirring up the souls of the young generation, and establishing their position in the rock scene. Afterwards, they continued to release now legendary titles, such as the gold standard of rock operas, "Tommy," and what many call their best, "Who's Next."

Quadrophenia

The Who
Geffen Records (November 15, 2011)

Over the long history of rock, it is impossible to say just how much of an impact they had.
For one, they opened up the beat rock genre. That is, they established the foundation of the current punk rock and hard rock genres, with their style becoming the base for the music scene that followed them. Their style heavily influenced overseas bands such as Oasis, KISS, Pearl Jam, Sex Pistols, Crush, Jam, etc., as well as Japanese bands like BOØWY, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, The Blue Hearts and many more.

Also, they really put the rock opera genre on the map.
First released in 1969, their two-disc total concept album, "Tommy", is an amazing combination of story and music, and together with "Quadrophenia" reign as rock opera masterpieces.
Movies were made of both albums, but if you plan on watching the movie versions, I personally prefer Tommy, directed by the phenomenal Ken Russell.

And one more! They were the beginning of the "Mod" culture among the young generation. They were the group dressing up in flashy suits and Mod parkas (like the parka Oda Yuji wore in the drama/film Odoru Daisousa-sen: Bayside Shakedown) riding customized Vespas.
The Who and Small Faces, led by Steve Marriott, were two of the premiere figures of Mod culture at the time.

Finally, and most important of all, has to be their destructive force of their live performances.
Roger Daltrey, vocals, would raise his hand and twirl the microphone. Pete Townshend, guitar, would spin his arm, playing the guitar in huge sweeping windmill motions. John Entwistle was stoic and unmoving on bass. And Keith Moon on drums... what can you say? The rowdiest kid in the world. From destroying his drum sets at each live performance to destroying the hotel room they stayed in, and even driving a car into a pool, he led a very destructive lifestyle.
Many other artists after them would attempt to imitate their intense, destructive performances, but they were the first, making it a staple of their shows even in the 60s.
I definitely want you to watch their performances at Woodstock and Monterrey.

After that long introduction (actually, if I start talking about The Who, I could go on about 100 times as long), the piece I want to introduce to you today debuted in 1973, "Quadrophenia."
Starting with the sounds of a wild, crashing sea on the first track, then a quiet moment followed by "Real Me." As soon as I start listening to this song, it feels like my brain is going to explode: the hard drums, a bass line that fits the phrase "making it sing" so perfectly, the guitar that's cutting sharp rhythms, and the powerful vocals. As soon as I put the needle on, everything in my head goes blank, and that sense of (good) tension stays at max all the way until the last song, "Love Reign O'er Me."
The songs themselves are incredible, but the concept encompassing two discs is also amazing. It drew a perfect picture describing the situation of the youth at the time, cutting directly to the point like a perfectly sharpened knife.
Quadrophenia was also made into a movie, released in Japan under the name "Saraba Seishun no Hikari" (Farewell, Light of Youth), so if anyone is interested, please check it out (though you should watch Tommy first!).
Also, the photo shoot that comes with the record is itself an amazing piece of work.
An amazing and unpredictable accomplishment from a band that debuted violent and destructive, Quadrophenia is an innovative, well thought-out masterpiece of an album.

Quadrophenia is an absolute must when speaking of rock history. You gotta hear this!

Well, this is again one of my super favorites!
"Just For Love"was released in 1970 as the 4th album of Quicksilver Messenger Service, one of the 3 biggest psychedelic rock bands in America.

"Psychedelic" is one of the counterculture movements which had spread among youth in the late 60's when Vietnam War was becoming more chaotic. The hippie commune centering around Haight and Ashbury streets was especially well known. The music venue "Fillmore" had produced many artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Doors, Steve Miller Band, Santana, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge... Countless unique artists appeared at the time.
Among those artists, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger
Service are called the 3 biggest psychedelic bands which took their stands in the core　of this movement.

What is awesome about them is the sound scale which is heavy and glamorous and　holds the line against other bands those days. And macho as well. The soulful squeezing voice of Dino Valenti penetrates in the center of the echo sound with depth, and the edgy sound of guitar played by John Cipollina and the awesome sound of piano played by genius Nicky Hopkins are just amazing. The members who played for this album are especially great!

Dino Valenti, the vocalist of the band, is the composer of "Hey Joe" widely known as a song played by Jimi Hendrix (different name is credited) and composed many great songs as a singer-song-writer. Nicky Hopkins is also incredible! He is a solitary genius pianist, a first call musician credited in albums of big name artists such as Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck Band, etc. He lived as a one-and-only musician while fighting a serious disease.

I would say the outstanding feature of "Just For Love" is its unconstrained tone of the sound with transparency recorded in Hawaii. The sound is comfortable to ears and engraved deeply into one's heart.
Furthermore, this album contains a track, which is special for me. Every end of the year, when the last day ends and the first day of the next year begins, I play "Fresh Air."
This is terrific! One of the best music in my life.
Dino's soulful voice, splendid piano solo by Nicky, arrangement with depth and reverb, and the beautiful melody lines ... everything is perfect. A masterpiece!
Album's opener "Wolf Run" is smoothly taken over by the title tune "Just For Love" and you'll be rocked with comfortable rhythm of "Cobra."

Quicksilver is good! Their "Happy Trails" and "Shady Grove" are also the albums you've gotta listen to and you would appreciate for sure.
No argument. They are just great! However, they never obtained worldwide popularity.
The fact is that they are not popular and half-forgotten especially in Japan.
However, this wonderful music (no doubt about it) is a great property we have to pass it down the generations.

A masterpiece of the time when Rock was hot: "Just For Love"
Listen to this!!
